Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W290 Digital Camera

Specifications: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 is one of Sony's most popular compact digital cameras. It has a 12.1MP images sensor and a 5x Optical zoom (2x digital). This model has a wide-angle lens (5mm - 25mm) and can also shoot HD movies (up to 720p). It has a beautiful 3" LCD display that has 230'000 pixels. For connectivity, it has a USB port, component video output and video/audio output. It comes with 11MB of built in memory and for additional storage; you can insert a memory card.
Design: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 comes in black, silver, bronze and blue. It measures at 3.9 x 0.9 x 2.2 inches and weighs at just 5.1 ounces. Sony products have always been very stylish and this model proves to be no exception. It has a semi-glossy/matte metal-like surface with soft rounded edges. The controls on this model are very simple with just a couple of buttons located on the right side of the LCD screen (unlike some other models with loads of buttons cluttered into a small area).
Features & Performance: Considering the price range, the quality of the images taken on the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 are pretty good. Nevertheless, when compared to the images taken on Canon compact cameras, there is something lacking in the quality of the images taken on this Sony model. In terms of performance, it is one of the best in its class, with a quick shot-to-shot and start-up time. The quality of the videos taken were very good, but unfortunately, you can't use the zoom feature while recording videos. It has the usual features found on Sony compact digital cameras such as the Smile Shutter Technology, intelligent auto mode, 13 photo modes to choose from and many other features. For a camera of this price range, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 comes with a wide array of features and settings. I give this camera four out of five star rating.

Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W290 Digital Camera Review

When designing the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 digital camera engineers kept the menu options easy to access and maneuver. Even though the controls are not extensive there are ample settings to take great shots in any situation. Included in the options are: an auto mode with access to ISO, exposure, white balance, focus, and metering, as well as a movie mode capable of 720p HD-quality videos. Also included is the easy mode that allows the adjustments of just a couple basic shooting options. On this model, there are 10 shooting modes to choose from.
The overall functionality of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 digital camera is excellent. Finding the buttons for basic operations was easy as there are just three buttons on top: the power button, the shutter-release button and a smile shutter button for instantly activating the have-smile-will-shoot feature. The time from startup to the first shot is a speedy 1.3 seconds.
Shutter lag in bright and good lighting with this camera was 0.4 seconds. In dimmer lighting the lag time went up to 0.7 seconds. When used without the flash on the average waiting time is about 2.3 seconds between shots. The difference when using the flash is only .4 seconds. Also the burst speed of this pocket camera is 2.1 frames per second.
The video quality with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W290 digital camera is excellent. There was only drawback where users can't use of the 5x zoom while recording. Playing the recordings on HDTV is easy but does require the use of an additional component cable where you would need to connect it to the terminal on the camera's underside.
